Opera Software released some new information regarding the popularity of the Opera Mini for iPhone app. According to the software developer, the app was used by more than 2.6 million people on their iPhones – in the first two weeks after the app was released.

Opera Software released some additional information you might find interesting. Like the fact that the iPhone is the #3 device used by Opera Mini users worldwide in the month of April 2010. Or the fact that the US jumped from #8 to #6 in the list of countries that use Opera Mini. Or the fact that the US is ranked #1 in terms of Opera Mini users on the iPhone, and the iPhone is the #1 handset used by Opera Mini users in the United States.

“While many iconic smartphones are superb web-browsing tools, today it is possible to make nearly every phone capable of browsing the Web gracefully,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera Software. “Because the number of mobile-web users will eventually dwarf wireline users, making the Web works flawlessly only on a handful of mobile devices is to turn our collective backs on more than a billion new users. We believe access to the Web is a universal right, and as more companies embrace developing sites for the wide spectrum of mobile-web users, we will come closer to that goal than ever before.”

As you may remember, Norwegian developer Opera Software submitted Opera Mini for iPhone to the App Store back in March – and in April, Apple welcomed the app in the App Store. When Opera Mini for iPhone made it to the App Store, it made quite a big splash. In just one day from its release, more than 1 million Opera Mini or iPhone downloads were recorded. At one point the app was the top free download in all 22 App Stores around the world.

“According to Apple’s download count, Opera Mini has been added to 1,023,380 Apple devices. Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser that brings the Web to nearly any mobile phone. Initial previews of the browser garnered rave reviews, indicating that Opera Mini delivers up to six times the speed, especially on congested networks, and significant Web-page compression to keep roaming and pay-per-MB costs at a minimum,” said Opera in a press release at the time.
