As you may remember, Norwegian developed Opera Software showcased Opera Mini for the iPhone at the 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC) back in February. On the 23rd of March, the company submitted the application to Apple’s App Store, confident in the fact that Apple “will not deny their users a choice in Web browser experience.”

Opera Software’s confidence paid of 20 days, 8 hours and 31 minutes later – on the 12th of April at 20:56:00 UTC, Apple approved Opera Mini for iPhone. As soon as it became available for download, Opera Mini for iPhone became the number one free download in all 22 App Stores (see image at the bottom).

In just one day from its release, more than 1 million Opera Mini or iPhone downloads were recorded. “According to Apple’s download count, Opera Mini has been added to 1,023,380 Apple devices. Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser that brings the Web to nearly any mobile phone. Initial previews of the browser garnered rave reviews, indicating that Opera Mini delivers up to six times the speed, especially on congested networks, and significant Web-page compression to keep roaming and pay-per-MB costs at a minimum,” said Opera in a press release.

Why wouldn’t iPhone users want to download and try Opera for iPhone? The browser offers up to 6 times faster download speeds – it can do this because data is routed through Opera’s servers before reaching your mobile device. By routing data through their servers, Opera can compress images and text before sending it to you - which reduces data traffic by up to 10 times. Furthermore Opera Mini for iPhone comes with features that Safari does not have, like find in page, saved passwords, adjustable image quality, full screen browsing, adjustable font sizes and customizable skins.

“Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone - especially during heavy Web traffic,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users.”
