Opera Mini is Opera’s little brother, a web browser specially designed to work on internet enabled mobile phones. We know that Opera is quite a popular piece of software, but until now we had no idea how popular. Opera Software has been kind enough to fill in the blanks. Earlier this month the Opera Software team announced that Opera Turbo, a feature in the Opera 10 web browser had been enabled by about 3 million people and that they used Opera Turbo to view about 668 million sites.

Today the Opera Software team came with yet another announcement: Opera Mini is used by more than 35 million people across the world. According to Opera’s latest State of the Mobile Web report, Opera Mini processes 2 Petabytes of data on a monthly basis. Just to put things in perspective, 1 Petabyte is equal to 1,000 Terabytes or 1 million Gigabytes or 1 quadrillion Bytes.

Here are some other things the State of the Mobile Web report uncovered:
- Thanks to Opera Mini, users in the top ten countries where Opera Mini is used (Russia, Indonesia, India, China, Ukraine, South Africa, United States, United Kingdom, Poland and Vietnam) saved approximately 8.1 billion USD per year or 672 million USD per month.
- The number of Opera Mini users was 11.5% higher in September 2009 compared to August 2009. The total number of Opera Mini users in September 2009 was of 35.6 million.
- The 35.6 million Opera Mini users viewed a total of 15 billion webpages in September 2009 alone. Compared to August, the same year, that’s a 7.2% increase.
- 227 million MB of data for operators worldwide was generated by Opera Mini users this September. That’s an increase of 8.7% compared to the month of august.

“We are on a mission to bring the Web to everyone, on their terms,” said Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera. “More than half the world’s population has a mobile phone. By making the mobile Web more affordable and available on almost any mobile phone, we help democratize it. This means we can expand the reach of the Web in a way that defies imagination.”
