The news back in March (around the same date) was that the Norwegian developer Opera Software released Opera Mini 6 and Opera Mobile 11. The news this May is that the aforementioned Opera Mini 6 browser is available for iOS-powered devices – that would be users of iOS 3.0 or later powered iPhones, iPod Touches and iPads.

Opera Mini 6 for iOS can be downloaded, free of charge for course, from Apple’s App Store or directly from Opera Software at m.opera.com. If you decide to get it from the App Store, you have to be at least 17 to download the app. Opera Softwares’ VP of Desktop Products, Jan Standal jokingly said once that “seventeen is very young, and I am not sure if, at that age, people are ready to use such an application. It’s very fast, you know, and it has a lot of features. I think the download requirement should be at least 18.”

The main reason you would want to use Opera Mini 6 to browse the web on your iOS-powered device is the fact that it can compress data traffic by up to 90%. This means that you will be able to browse the web faster on slow connections. It also means you will pay less for internet connectivity when roaming. You will be happy because you have more money in your pocket and you will be happy because you can access the stuff you want faster.

There are of course other reasons you would want to get Opera Mini for iOS. Like the share buttons that let you share things with your My Opera, Facebook, Twitter or vKontakte friends, the redesigned Opera menus, the new skin, and the faster and smoother panning and zooming.

Opera Software has uploaded a video presentation of Opera Mini 6 for iOS to YouTube you can check it out here.

Here’s what Opera Software CEO Lars Boilesen had to say about Opera Mini 6 for iOS:
“I would compare it to walking onto the stage and hearing the roar of the crowd. We have put in a lot of rehearsal and clever thought behind the new experience. The Opera Mini browser has always kicked up the tempo when downloading pages; now the browsing flows along to a smooth, easy beat.”
