Opera Launches Native Opera Mini for Windows Mobile, Says Opera 10.5 Downloads Tripled
To tell you the truth, when my eyes saw Opera Mini in the press release, I was kind of hoping that Opera Mini for iPhone made it to the App Store. But that wasn’t the case – despite Opera’s confidence, I have serious doubts that Apple will welcome Opera Mini for iPhone into the App Store. What Opera Software launched the other day is a native version of Opera Mini 5 Beta for mobile devices powered by Windows Mobile 5 and 6.
Opera Mini for Windows Mobile comes with the all the features you can expect to get from an Opera Software-developed browser – things like tabbed browsing, bookmarks, Speed Dial, password manager, and so on. It also comes with a feature that compresses data traffic by up to 90%, allowing webpages to load a lot faster. The difference between the native Opera Mini for Windows Mobile version and traditional Opera Mini versions is that it does not require Java.
"Windows Mobile deserves a mobile browser that looks better, handles better and delivers better than the default browser," said Dag Olav Norem, Vice President of Products, Opera Software. "Even though Opera has 50 million satisfied Opera Mini users, we always seek ways to improve our browser for each and every mobile phone user out there. Now, we are pleased to offer the world's most popular mobile Web browser as a native Windows Mobile application."
Moving on, Opera Software rolled out the final version of its desktop browser, Opera 10.5, at the start of the week. After a very speedy development process (5 RCs in just two days), the final version of Opera 10.5 was released this Monday. Why the rush? Because this March is when Microsoft started to roll out the choice screen – the browser ballot screen presented to the about 200 million Windows users in Europe that have Internet Explorer set as the default browser.
As co-founder of Opera Software Jon von Tetzchner commented earlier this week, “people who try Opera will see that our product is better, because it is fast, powerful, easy to use and has the best security record in the industry.” This certainly seems to be the case. Ever since Microsoft started to roll out the choice screen Opera 10.5 downloads have tripled.
