Opera 10.60 Coming with Performance and UI Improvements

The development team at Opera Software, the Norwegian developer we all know and love for making the Opera web browser, has announced that it is gearing up for the release of Opera 10.60. As the Opera team explained, this version will be considerably faster than the current stable version, Opera 10.53 – which in turn is 10 times faster than version 10.10.

Besides speed, Opera 10.60 will come with some visual changes as well. The user interface will feature icons instead of hard to read thumbnails for internal tabs. Additionally the O menu now says Menu for easy discovery. Longtime Opera users will notice that tab hover previews look a bit different also.

They will also notice that Windows 7 taskbar previews are disabled by default. As Opera explained, this measure had to be taken because it annoyed a lot of users who had multiple tabs open. If it did not annoy you, you can enable the feature from the Preferences dialog, the Tabs section.

For now Opera 10.60 is in its infancy. Opera 10.60 Alpha 1 was rolled out the other day. If you’re interested in getting the application, you can find a download link here (Windows, Mac and Linux). Be warned though that this is an early version that has been released for testing purposes. It may contain serious bugs, it may not work properly, and all the regular warnings associated to software that’s not a stable, final version.

In related news, Opera Software released some new information regarding the popularity of the Opera Mini for iPhone app. According to the software developer, the app was used by more than 2.6 million people on their iPhones – in the first two weeks after the app was released. Opera shed some released some additional information you might find interesting (see here).
