Online Leaks: Windows 7 Build 7057, Release Candidate Branch

Build 7057 of the Windows 7 OS (operating system), which comes with an official label indicating it is part of the Release Candidate (RC) branch, has just been made available for download on torrent sites. This comes as no surprise to anyone I’m sure, since several other builds have already been leaked online (the latest being Windows 7 Build 7048).

The build string of this latest online leak is “7057.0.x86fre.winmain.090305-2000” indicating that it was compiled on the 5th of March, the current year. There is not RC mention in the build name, but there is during the installation process – just check out the image at the bottom of the article. You will be able to see in the EULA (End User License Agreement) that Build 7048 is tagged as “Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System Release Candidate 1”

People keeping track of these things will remember that the previously leaked build, mainly Build 7048, initially became available for 64-bit processor systems. It was Windows 7 Build 7048 x64 that leaked first, with the 32-bit processor version following soon after. With Build 7057, things went the other way around: at this time only the 32-bit version is available on torrent sites, but I’m sure the x64 build will not take too long to make an appearance.

Reports indicate that Build 7057 brings some new changes to the table, mostly visual: new logon background, new shutdown background, new user account icons, additional wallpapers, no more send feedback links, and modified screen watermark (“Evaluation Copy” instead of “For testing purposes only”). From a functionality point of view, with Windows 7 Build 7057 the UAC problems reported earlier have been addressed, and the taskbar will resize when the user decide to switch from large to small icons.

There is more good news to report – it would seem that the license key provided for Windows 7 Beta 1, Build 7000, can be used to activate this recent leak, and will allow the OS to live on until March, 2010.

UPDATE: Windows 7 Build 7057 x64 has also been spotted on torrent sites. The full file name: “7057.0.090305-2000_x64fre_client_en-us_Retail_Ultimate-GB1CULXFRER_EN_DVD.iso” indicates it was also set up on the 5th of March.
