When Yahoo! Messenger 10 was still in the Beta phase of its development process, we detailed the top 10 reasons why you should download and install the software. Now that Yahoo! Messenger 10 has been released as a final and stable version, those reasons have not been rendered obsolete. They still apply. All the bits and pieces that made Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta an attractive download have only become better in Yahoo! Messenger 10 final.

I’ve though of an additional reason why you should start using Yahoo! Messenger 10: the brand new Connection Troubleshooter. I first saw it popup when I tried to connect to Yahoo! Messenger 10 but my internet connection was down. Obviously I was intrigued and sought more information. I found this concise and to the point explanation by Yahoo! Messenger Senior Product Manager, Sarah Bacon:

“If Yahoo! Messenger has problems connecting during the sign-in process, a small window will appear alerting you that there may be a problem with your internet connection. From there, you can click the Troubleshoot button to let it run some connection diagnostics on your machine. After some quick analysis, it will recommend some next steps for resolving the issue. The wizard also records all the steps it took while diagnosing the problem. Click the “Show Details” button on the final screen to view the details (sometimes it’s helpful to copy and paste those details when working with customer care on an issue).”

If you are currently using Yahoo! Messenger 9 and would like to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 10, check out this tutorial. It will show you how to easily upgrade from one version to another.

Here are some Yahoo! Messenger 10 highlights that will hopefully push you to upgrade:
  • Windows 7 support
  • High quality video calls.
  • Y! Updates, an alternative contacts list view that displays a stream of updates (in real-time).
  • Enhanced language support. On the sign-in screen there’s a language menu that lets you pick from 16 different languages. Alternatively you can switch from one language to another from Messenger -> Preferences -> Language.
  • Enhanced Yahoo! Insider that encompasses the following: Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! news, Yahoo! Weather, and Yahoo! Search.
  • Updated IM window icons.
  • Enhanced Yahoo! Updates controls that let you choose if updates from certain contacts will be displayed or not.
  • If you make a call to a friend and he does not pick up within 20 seconds, the call will be automatically terminated.
  • If your internet connection cannot support a full video call, it is downgraded to audio-only.
