The month of June kicked off with very good news from the Google Docs team: the free, web-based word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and form application provided by the Mountain View search engine giant has added two more names to their list of list of supported file formats, mainly .docx and .xlsx. To put it more simply, Google Docs now provides support for Word and Excel in the MS Office 2007 productivity suite.

According to Product Manager with Google Apps, Anil Sabharwal, this feature was a long time coming. People who were introduced to Google Docs were very pleased to find out about the service’s offerings: seamlessly share documents online, no need to send emails back and forth, no need to worry about losing your documents since they are stored in the cloud, and no need to carry documents around with you since they can be readily accessed online. But there was one feature that was missing – the option to upload MS Office 2007 files to Google Docs.

“There was one recurring question from my friends - how do I get my Word and Excel 2007 documents into the cloud? Today, I'm happy to be able to answer their question: we've added .docx and .xlsx to the list of file formats that we accept for uploading documents (which already included .doc, .odt, xls, .ods, .ppt, .csv, .html, .txt, .rtf, and others)," explains Anil Sabharwal.

Here is a more detailed look at all the file formats Google Docs provides support for:
- Spreadsheet file format support: .xls, .xlsx, .ods, .csv, .tsv, .txt, .tsb.
- Documents file format support: .doc, .docx, .html, plain text (.txt), .rtf.
- Presentations file format support: .ppt, .pps
- PDF support as well.

If you have Word 2007 or Excel 2007 files that you want to upload to Google Docs, then go ahead and test this new functionality. The process is a straightforward one: click Upload -> Browse -> Select a .docx or .xlsx file -> Open -> Upload file.
