I knew that the Nokia brand is coming back to the smartphone market and that HMD Global, the Finnish company that owns the rights to the Nokia brand, plans to release new mobile devices powered by Google’s Android mobile operating system.

What I did not expect was for HMD Global to resurrect the most memed phone ever – the iconic Nokia 3310, the sturdy phone that sold more than 126 million units until it was discontinued in 2005.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 in Spain, HMD Global announced that it will release a redesigned version of the iconic Nokia 3310 as well as three Android-powered smartphones: the Nokia 3, Nokia 5, and Nokia 6.

"Nokia phones stir real emotions; people know them for their beautiful design and craftsmanship, together with a built-to-last quality that you can rely on," said Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer of HMD Global. "Our new portfolio combines these classic Nokia hallmarks with a best-in-class Android performance and a new level of craftsmanship. For the Nokia 3310 we just couldn’t resist. We wanted to reward loyal Nokia phone fans and make a statement that rich heritage, innovation and modern design can go hand-in-hand. Fundamentally, it is about making sure that right across our portfolio we are delivering this pure Nokia experience."

The new Nokia 3310 isn’t an exact copy of the old Nokia 3310. It’s thinner and lighter, has a larger screen, and it has a different button scheme. But the iconic silhouette of the original Nokia 3310 is still there. Consider this a redesigned version of the classic Nokia 3310, a version that’s better suited for 2017. Or as HMD Global put it, this is "the iconic Nokia 3310, reborn with a modern twist on design."
