This week has been all about the release of Opera 10.10 as a final, stable version. The Opera 10.10 update plugged extremely and highly severe security holes, so at least from a security point of view, it was much welcomed. But that wasn’t the most exciting part about Opera 10.10 – the most exciting part was that Opera Unite was built into the browser.

With Opera Unite, any Opera user can turn his computer into a web server. For example he can share files and photos online without having to upload them to a file sharing service, and he can stream music to a mobile phone, game console or to another computer.

Now that Opera 10.10 is available for download to Windows, Mac OS X and Linux users, the Opera Software Desktop Team is not resting on its laurels. Work on the next version of the browser has already kicked off and the Opera Desktop team has announced the release of Opera 10.20 Alpha.

With Opera 10.20 Alpha, the emphasis falls on widget behavior. In the past Opera widgets could only run in the browser window, so the Opera browser had to be up and running for the widgets to work. With Opera 10.20 this will change. The widgets will be able to run just like any other software application – the Opera browser does not have to be open for the widgets to work.

“After having released our final version of Opera Unite, we are proud to present you with the next level of Web applications for your desktop. Opera Widgets are now first-class citizens in your computer, being accessible from the same place as other applications and providing the chance to develop desktop applications only once, running in any operating system. Please note that this release includes only changes related to Opera Widgets. There are no other changes in the browser functionality,” commented Opera Software Engineer, Bazyli Zygan.
