Nintendo is going to create games for mobiles – smartphones and tablets. If you already knew that, then the news is that the company already has 5 titles in development.

All of them will be released to the public by March 2017. The first one will be rolled out by fall 2015.

Back in March, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata confirmed that the company will venture onto other hardware platforms that its own and start to develop mobile games for smartphones and tablets.

According to the latest news, Nintendo already has 5 games in the works. And by the end of March 2017, these 5 titles will move out of the development phase and you’ll be able to play them on a smartphone or tablet. The first title, you’ll be glad to know, will be released this autumn (fall 2015).

Why only 5 games? You may be thinking that 5 seems like a very small number. I agree with you. You’re right to think so. But, as Satoru Iwata pointed out during a meeting with investors, these won’t be any run-of-the-mill games that you’ll quickly forget. The emphasis will fall on quality – and when you’re working on a quality product, you have to invest a lot of time.

On top of that, Nintendo will not take existing games and port them to mobile. It will create top quality, brand new titles for mobile.

Nintendo’s 5 new games won’t carry the “free-to-play” moniker. Since Satoru Iwata doesn’t like that term and considers it to be insincere, the games will be labeled as “free-to-start.” What we usually call free-to-play games, Nintendo will call free-to-start games. You’ll get to start the game for free and, as you progress, you’ll be presented with options that will have you spend money. Simple, right?

Nintedo’s partner in this mobile games endeavor is Japanese mobile developer DeNA.
