Nine Inch Nails (NIN), the industrial rock music group founded by Trent Reznor in Cleveland over a decade ago, has announced the availability of their iPhone app, which should make it to the Apple App Store any time now – according to Reznor’s Twitter post the app is still awaiting approval. The app will be offered free of charge to NIN fans all over the world, but that is not the best thing about this application – the web is already alight with word that it will put all other music band apps to shame.

“Anyone who’s an executive at a record label does not understand what the internet is, how it works, how people use it, how fans and consumers interact — no idea, I’m surprised they know how to use e-mail. They have built a business around selling plastic discs, and nobody wants plastic discs any more,” says Trent Reznor, showing his commitment to making a break from the traditional practices of the music industry.

Here are the features you can expect to get from the Nine Inch Nails iPhone app:
- Access to NIN media content: music, videos, pictures, message boards.
- Access to the NIN web page (iPhone version of the aforementioned web page).
- Custom playlists.
- A feature called “Nearby” uses the iPhone’s built-in GPS to let NIN fans to socialize amongst each other. You can connect to NIN fans in your vicinity, chat, share images, reveal profile information. It is like Twitter for NIN fans says Rob Sheridan. “You can post a message or a photo by location, and if you're at a show you can see conversations between other people who are right there,” he says.

If you would like to spread the word about this upcoming app to your NIN friends, or people you know are NIN fans, one way to go about it is to use Skype for iPhone – but since using it has proven to be problematic, you could go for something we’ve only heard good things about: Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone.
