Did you know that Microsoft has a lock screen app for Google’s Android mobile operating system? Called Next Lock Screen, the app is currently a Microsoft Garage project. If you decide to get Next Lock Screen (it’s available for free on Google Play; the link’s below), it will let you see your calendar, missed calls, or emails without having to unlock your Android smartphone.

Next Lock Screen – Main Features
  • Save time – you can save time by not having to unlock your phone to read text messages, see who called you, check your calendar, or launch an app.
  • Calendar – view your daily calendar and scroll through upcoming meetings.
  • Conference calls – with a simple tap you can connect to a conference call.
  • Apps – launch apps directly from Next Lock Screen; the app displays the apps you use most often based on your location.
  • Background – you can set it so the background changes based on your location.
Microsoft’s Next Lock Screen app needs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or newer to work.

You can get the Next Lock Screen app for free from Google Play.

The Microsoft Garage is a sanctuary for creativity, it is Microsoft’s 24-hour idea factory and haven for über geeks, it is a protected habitat for Microsoft employees and their wild ideas. The Garage is the place where Microsoft employees go to work on their pet project. Next Lock Screen is just one project you will find in The Garage.

Early access to Microsoft Garage projects is available here.
A detailed presentation of The Garage is available here.

Since we’re talking about the lock screen, I have to remind you that Android 5.0 Lollipop lets you access notifications from the lock screen and lets you set it so that only certain notifications get through. I also have to remind you that you can lock your Android smartphone by pairing it with another device, like you smartwatch (this feature is commonly known as proximity lock).
