Mountain View search engine giant, who is constantly working on improving their services, has just recently released two great new features for their take on the mail client, Gmail. The first feature will come in handy when you get messages from duplicate contacts as it will merge said contacts. The second feature allows you to add a custom signature to your outgoing messages, a signature detailing your current geographical location.

The merge contacts feature, which in the near future will become automatic, is quite simple to use: identify the contact names in duplicate, check the box next to them and click “Merge these contacts”. From that point on all the details regarding that contact will be combined together; it will not affected contacts with multiple email addresses (you will still be able to send out a message to the address of choice).

The second feature allows you to further enhance your custom signature by appending your current geographical location to it (according to your IP). To enable it just access your Gmail account -> Settings -> Labs -> Location in Signature -> Enable -> Save Changes.

In related mail client news, we have to say that Microsoft recently updated Windows Live Hotmail, making it much more appealing to users worldwide (even though Hotmail’s user base has dropped 4%). Yahoo as well is worried about Gmail, its soaring market share of 39% and its regular features release.

“Yahoo!, with 91.9 million unique monthly visitors in December 2008 and about 11% growth last year, has reason to worry, too. If Gmail continues growing as it has been, it could become the leading free e-mail provider by the end of 2011 or thereabout. We've been the most popular Webmail service in the US and a worldwide leader for years, and we will continue to lead from the front of the pack - not by looking in the rearview mirror,” Said Vice President with Yahoo! Mail, John Kremer in an interview for WebProNews.
