New Year's Treats from Microsoft, Google, Mozilla

Let me start off by wishing everyone a Happy New Year! Hope you had a blast during the winter holidays. Fresh into 2010, some of the biggest names in the software world have a few surprises for you.

Starting with Mountain View-based search engine giant Google, you might remember that the Google.com homepage contained an Easter egg. If you went to Google.com on the 29th of December for example and hit the I’m Feeling Lucky button, you would see a New Year’s countdown timer. If you go to Google.com now and hit the I’m Feeling Lucky button, a Happy New Year animation will appear. Go ahead, try it out. Go to Google.com (not the localized version) and press I’m Feeling Lucky.

Moving on, Program Manager on the Silverlight Team with Microsoft, Tim Heuer, came up with a new Windows 7 theme that focuses on the arrival of 2010. The theme is made up of 35 desktop wallpapers (with an embedded calendar in each one) published by Smashing Magazine, an online publication that focuses on web designers and developers. You can download the Smashing Magazine January 2010 Wallpaper Windows 7 Theme here.

“Each month Smashing Magazine, one of my favorite online subscriptions, puts together a set of desktop wallpaper for the month with calendars on it. These images are from various worldwide contributors. Smashing Magazine is primarily a site for design (and does focus a lot on web design, etc.) and is a great resource for any one who appreciates design aspects. They also provide free fonts, icons, web templates, etc. from time to time. Anyhow, I’m fond of their monthly post of wallpapers to see what people come up with. This time I figured: why not make a Windows 7 Theme out of these? So I did. Simple enough,” explained Tim Heuer.

Keeping with the calendar theme we’ve got going on here, Mozilla Links’ Percy Cabello drew my attention to two Firefox inspired 2010 calendars that you can download and print out. Check out the images below.
