Namechk: Social Media Username Checking Service
As F-Secure’s Q1 2009 Security Threat Summary has pointed out, more and more people are keeping tabs on their friends and contacts by using social networking sites. Facebook, who recently proved it wants nothing to do with The Pirate Bay, for example, has reached a total of 175 million accounts and it is estimated that by the end of the year it will hit the 300 million mark. In an such an online environment it is getting harder and harder to maintain your web identity consistent.
What I mean by that is that the username you've used to set up an account for one online service, may not be available for another. Let’s say you have used the same handle for your YouTube and DailyMotion accounts and when you want to set up a Flixster account you discover the username is already taken by someone else. What Namechk does is it allows you to check a multitude of sites and see whether your desired username is available or not.
David Gosse, co-creator of Namechk comments: “It is increasingly important to develop your personal and company brand consistently across the major social network websites. That means getting the same username identity as often as possible. It makes it easier for others to find you, and it also builds a cohesive marketing strategy that eventually creates a presence in the major search engines. It also keeps others from tapping into your success and brand jacking your efforts and identity.”
The whole process of using Namechk is pretty straightforward: simply visit the web page here, type in your current username or the username you would like to have, click “chk” and see if that handle is already being used by someone else (who and on which site). The interesting thing is that a simple click will take you from Namechk to that user’s profile (for example click on the taken YouTube username and you will be directed to that user’s profile page).
