Mozilla Will Rebrand Firefox Personas Because...

As a passionate supporter of Mozilla and a long-time Firefox user, I am more than familiar with Personas. But it seems that Personas are confusing for new Firefox users. Mozilla talked with new users and uncovered that often times they find the name Personas confusing and can’t grasp the fact that Personas are just themes they you can use to customize the way Firefox looks. New users do not use the term “Personas” to describe the look of their browser, they use terms like “wallpapers” and “backgrounds” instead.

It is for that reason that Mozilla has decided to rebrand Personas. Since new users are confused by the term, and since tests ran by Mozilla showed that new users are more likely to try out Personas when they are called something else, Mozilla decided to rename Personas to something more understandable and localizable.

What will the new name of Personas be? Mozilla put forward 5 options that you can vote on. The five options are: backgrounds, wallpapers, skins, themes, and other (you can suggest a name of your own). You can vote for the new name of Personas here. The voting period ends on Wednesday, the 8th of February.

“We’d like to rename Personas to something more understandable and localizable. And we’d love your help. Your choice will play a big role in which name we choose, as well as other factors including the word’s meaning in other cultures and languages,” said Mozilla’s Amy Tsay.

What will happen to the Personas brand. Mozilla explained that it is a good name and it will probably be used for a different product, a product that will be released in the future.

Speaking about releases, I should remind you that earlier this week Mozilla updated the Firefox browser to version 10.0. You can read more about this topic here.
