Following the release of Thunderbird 3 Beta 1 back in December last year, it is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of Firefox 3 Beta 2 which boasts a pretty long list of fixes. The software is available for download, but as is the case with Beta releases it is mainly meant for testers and hardcore Thunderbird fans. Regular users that don’t very much like the perspective of running into bugs and other issues are very well advised to stick with Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, the latest and safest version of Mozilla’s email client.

“Thunderbird 3 Beta 2 is now available for download. This milestone is focused on testing the core functionality of the new features and platform changes that will be included in Thunderbird 3. Testers can download Thunderbird 3 Beta 2 builds for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux in 38 different languages,” explains Mozilla’s David Ascher.

This second Beta version of Thunderbird 3, which is based on the Gecko 1.9.1 platform, is supposed to be more stable, more performance oriented, more compatible and more sustainable than previous versions. Amongst the 340+ changes in Thunderbird 3 Beta 2, here are the ones that stand out of the crowd, the most notable ones:
- Message Archive: as the name suggests, this feature allows you to archive messages in your inbox.
- Activity Manager: this feature will keep track of the interactions between your email provider and the Thunderbird client.
- Enhanced IMAP message download: in order to address the need for better offline browsing and faster message loads, IMAP messages are not downloaded in the background by default. Customization options include activating this feature for all folders or for specific folders.

So what does the future hold for Thunderbird 3? David Ascher again: “The next beta release is our last scheduled beta. As such, we’re thinking of it as the last milestone to introduce Big New Features. Furthermore, we’re hoping to be even better behaved this cycle and land features as early in the process as possible.”
