Mozilla recently announced that it may be able to bring its Firefox web browser to Apple’s iOS mobile operating system.

Mozilla recently introduced a new Suggested Tiles feature. It is an advertising experience that will bring up sponsored suggestions in the New Tab page.

Firefox for iOS

Mozilla’s aim is to make the Firefox web browser available to as many platforms as possible, to as many devices as possible, and in as many languages as possible. One name that is noticeably missing from Firefox’s list of supported platforms is Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. But that may change soon!

Mozilla recently announced that, thanks to “the latest improvements and tools in iOS 8,” it may be able to make Firefox available on iOS. Mind you, Apple is still enforcing its “you’ll only use the WebKit rendering engine” rule. Consequently, Firefox for iOS won’t offer the full Firefox experience. But iOS 8, with the aforementioned improvements and tools, will allow Mozilla to create a new Firefox experience for iOS.

“The Firefox team has been working hard on development of this new browser over the past few months. We are sharing source code in Github for the brave early testers and are also preparing for a limited Firefox for iOS Beta soon. Of course, we would prefer to have a large, open beta, but we must work through the required development and release process to get a Firefox app tested on iOS to get it ready to share with the world,” announced Mozilla.

New Suggested Tiles Feature

Last November, Mozilla introduced Directory Tiles and Enhanced Tiles. Directory Tiles showed that it is possible to deliver successful advertising in Firefox; Enhanced Tiles was Mozilla’s first step towards delivering personalized suggestions in Firefox’s New Tab page. Mozilla recently announced that it plans to take things to the next level and introduced Suggested Tiles.

“Suggested Tiles is an advertising experience that delivers content recommendations that are relevant for the user in a transparent way while at the same time respecting their privacy, and giving them complete control over the experience,” said Mozilla Product Manager Kevin Ghim.

“With Suggested Tiles, we want to show the world that it is possible to do relevant advertising and content recommendations while still respecting users’ privacy and giving them control over their data. And to bring influence to bear on the whole industry, we know we will need to deliver a highly effective advertising product,” said Mozilla’s VP of Content Services, Darren Herman.
