Did you ever ask yourself the question “Who uses the Firefox 4 Beta?” To my mind, the Beta version of Firefox 4 is used by software enthusiasts (like myself) and Firefox fans (also like myself). The Mozilla metrics team has gathered information from Beta testers and has a better idea of who uses Firefox 4 Beta.

Via the Feedback add-on included un Firefox 4 Beta, Beta testers were presented with a short survey which asked some basic browsing behavior and demographic questions. Not every Beta tester out there responded to the survey. 7% of Beta testers (which is more than 30,000 people) did respond and helped the metrics team get a better idea of who tests Firefox 4 Beta.

Here is what the metrics team found out:
Age – 75% of Firefox 4 Beta testers are under 35.
Sex – 96% of Firefox 4 Beta testers are male.
Web activity – 695 of Firefox 4 Beta testers spend more than 4 hours per day surfing the web.
Skills – 71% of Firefox 4 Beta testers gave themselves an advanced technical rating.
Reasons for using the internet – the top 3 reasons for using the internet Beta testers invoked were: entertainment, communication, and socializing
Most accessed sites – the top 3 most accessed sites were: search engines, news sites, and webmail. Social networking sites came in 4th, while online gambling sites came in at the bottom of the list.

“So what does all this survey information show? Overall, it clearly indicates that our Beta sample is far from representative of the general Firefox population. And in order to achieve more representative feedback, we need to increase the female, older and less technical user bases; we will definitely coordinate our Marketing, Metrics, and Community efforts to reach out to these users,” explained Andres Garcia on behalf of the metrics team.

In related news, the metrics team recently released some statistics about when Private Browsing Mode is most used (read more about it here). In further related news, Mozilla released Firefox 4 Beta 4 earlier this week (read more about it here).
