The story of how Yahoo! integrates Facebook into its online properties continues. As you may very well remember, back in December 2009, Yahoo!’s Vice President of Communities, Jim Stoneham announced that in the first half of 2010 Yahoo! will be deeply integrating Facebook Connect across its properties.

So far we’ve seen several results of this effort:
  • The option to import the email addresses of all your Facebook friends to your Yahoo! Contacts list. This functionality makes it easy to stay in touch with the people you care about (read more about it here).
  • The option to update your Facebook status directly from Yahoo! Mail. Also, when you receive an email from one of your Facebook friends, you’ll be able to see that friend’s Facebook profile photos (read more about it here).
  • Comment or ‘Like’ Updates that you see on the What’s New page in Yahoo! Mail (read more about it here).

Yahoo! has recently lifted the veil on a new feature that that populates your contact’s details page with information from the popular social networking site Facebook.

“To activate any Facebook-related feature, you first must link your Facebook account by clicking on “Add to Facebook” in the status section of Yahoo! Mail (if you’ve linked before, you are already good to go). After you sign in with Facebook, presto! Your Yahoo! Contacts now gets filled with information from Facebook to make it even more useful. Plus you get all the new features we’ve launched recently – and continue to launch – in Yahoo! Mail,” commented Senior Product Manager with Yahoo! Mail, Rick Pal.

This means that after you link your Yahoo! account with your Facebook account, you’ll see that your Yahoo! Contacts automatically gets filled with info from Facebook. It also means that you’ll be able to take advantage of all the Facebook-related features Yahoo! has launched – and the new ones it will launch in the future.

Here is the Facebook info that is put in your Yahoo! Contacts:
  • Contacts that use Facebook: public details, Facebook photo, info they publicly shared (location, work history, things like that).
  • Contacts that you’re connected with on Facebook: all the info presented above, plus their email address, birthday, recent status messages, and all other details your Facebook friend has shared.

“Now your Yahoo! Contacts becomes much richer – effortlessly – by supplementing details you’ve added with information automatically from Facebook (and don’t worry, we will never overwrite Facebook details with anything you’ve added). It’s just our way of helping you stay connected to the people who matter the most to you,” added Rick Pal.
