Microsoft’s newest iOS app, Microsoft Selfie, is turning out to be a big success. It’s been a mere 2 weeks since the app launched and it’s already managed to rack up more than half a million downloads.

That’s very impressive and quite the good news. It’s not the best news though. Since launch, the Beijing-based team behind the app has been paying close attention to user feedback. And, based on that feedback, it gave the app a much-requested feature – the option to share selfies.

Microsoft Selfie for iOS hit 500,000 downloads

Earlier this month, Microsoft rolled out an iOS app called Microsoft Selfie. What does it do? Precisely what the name says: it takes selfies. The cool thing about it is that it also makes your selfies look better. It does this by:
  • analyzing your picture and intelligently enhancing it based on age, gender, skin tone and lighting;
  • reducing noise;
  • automatically adjusting the exposure.

Available for free on Apple’s App Store since early January, Microsoft Selfie has been downloaded more than 500,000 times so far.

“Within two weeks after releasing, our app has achieved more than half a million downloads, which is a lovely surprise for our team,” said Microsoft’s Peggy Dai, program manager of the incubation team. “Together with the research team we will introduce more innovative features to the app, and expand availability on more platforms.”

Microsoft Selfie gets much-requested 'Share' option and more

Speaking about introducing new features, it must be mentioned that at launch, Microsoft Selfie did not come with the option to share selfies. Now it does. After you take a selfie, you can share it via Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Mail, Message, or any other iOS app that provides support for sharing.

That’s not all. Microsoft introduced a couple more changes: an updated interface and a brand new app icon (see below; the old icon is on the left, the new icon is on the right).

Microsoft Selfie isn’t the only app that Microsoft released this month. A few days ago, Microsoft rolled out Mimicker, a free alarm app for Android.

It lets you snooze the alarm, but it doesn’t let you dismiss it – not unless you complete a game first. Three types of games are available; one asks you to mimic an emotion, another asks you to find a certain color, and the last one asks you to repeat a complicated phrase.
