Microsoft’s OneDrive cloud storage service just turned one. There are now hundreds of millions of people all over the world who use the cloud service to store, view, sync and share data.

I remind you that One Drive (formerly SkyDrive) became globally available back in February 2014.

“I can’t believe it was only a year ago that we launched OneDrive. We wouldn’t be anywhere without the hundreds of millions of people that use OneDrive and I wanted to say thank you on behalf of the entire OneDrive team!” said Omar Shahine, Group Program Manager, OneDrive.

A year ago, when OneDrive became globally available, it had the following functionality to offer:
  • 7GB of free cloud storage space.
  • Upload files to the cloud, keep files securely stored in the cloud.
  • Access uploaded files from anywhere.
  • Keep uploaded files synced across all you devices.
  • Automatically upload photos and videos to the cloud.
  • Create and share folders.
  • View Office documents online, edit Office documents online.
  • Backup and sync your PC’s or your device’s settings.
  • Available for multiple platforms: Windows, Windows Phone, iOS, and Android.
A year was more than enough time for Microsoft to make some important changes to OneDrive. The storage space went up, new names were added to the list of supported platforms, the upload performance went up, and more.

Omar Shahine put together a top 10 list of things that changed in the past year. Here it is:
  1. Increased free storage by three times to up to 30 GB (2x base quota, 5x camera roll bonus)
  2. Office 365 storage benefit went from 20 GB to UNLIMITED!
  3. Launched OneDrive for Business and added it to all our mobile apps.
  4. Office became free on iPad and Android.
  5. Partnered with Salesforce.com.
  6. Increased upload performance by roughly 3 times.
  7. OneNote powered by OneDrive became free on PCs and Macs.
  8. Office Lens turns whiteboards and documents into Office files.
  9. Save and Send files in OneDrive from Outlook.com & OWA accounts.
  10. Introduced photo albums, tag support, object detection, and search.
