I am sure it comes as no surprise when I tell you that if you are a Windows user, you must use a genuine, properly good security software application to protect your operating system. You need to get a security software solution to protect your system and your data from all the nasties that are out there – like viruses, Trojans, worms, malware, and so on.

What may come as a surprise is that the “genuine, properly good security software application” mentioned above is the Microsoft-developed Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE), an application that is provided free of charge to users who own genuine Windows software .

Microsoft has always said that MSE is a high-quality consumer antivirus and antimalware application. Now we have confirmation that MSE is a properly good security software solution from a source that is not, well, Microsoft. The source I am talking about is Virus Bulletin, who gave MSE a VB100 award. Virus Bulletin is a highly reputable testing organization in the industry whose goal is to measure the detection effectiveness and quality of antivirus products.

“We are very excited to share that Microsoft Security Essentials, our no-cost anti-malware service for consumers, achieved the VB100 award for the August 2010 Edition of Virus Bulletin. Microsoft products including Microsoft Security Essentials and Forefront Client Security, have received VB100 awards since June 2007, demonstrating Microsoft’s dedication to quality and our commitment to providing effective anti-malware protection to consumers and enterprise customers alike,” announced Group Communications Manager with Microsoft, Eric Foster.

So there you have it. If you want a properly good security software solution and you don’t want to spend money on it, you can get Microsoft Security Essentials. Don’t surf the web unprotected like the roughly 50% of PC users out there (according to market data); use MSE and stay safe and protected.

If you want to get Microsoft Security Essentials, you can download the application
