Microsoft Office 2008: Security Update and Mac Trial Version Released

People using Microsoft’s Office 2008 suite will be interested to know that the Redmond-based software developer issued version 12.1.7, update that fixes a security problem that allowed a person with malicious intent to use specially crafted code and overwrite the targeted computer’s memory contents. People that are not currently using Office 2008 would probably want to know that a trial version of MS Office 2008 for Mac has been made available for download.

Earlier this week Microsoft issued Office 2008 for Mac version 12.1.7 and Office 2004 for Mac version 11.5.4 – both are security updates meant to address vulnerabilities affecting the software applications. “This security update resolves a privately reported and a publicly disclosed vulnerability. The vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution if the user opens a specially crafted Excel file. An attacker who successfully exploited these vulnerabilities could take complete control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user right,” explains Microsoft.

If you already have Office 2008 installed on your machine, then make sure to update and stay safe. If you do not have the software installed on your Mac OS X powered machine, then you could download a free 30-day trial version and put the software through its paces. The trial version comes with the same functionality provided by the standard Office 2008 for Mac edition. The only downside is that you will have to register with Mactopia in order to activate the software.
