There certainly is no shortage of photo & video apps in the App Store, with tons of developers having come up with cool and interesting photo apps for Apple’s iOS mobile operating system. One developer stands out above all the rest: Microsoft, one of Apple’s biggest rivals.

Microsoft has tons of apps for Apple’s mobile OS: games, such as Age of Empires: Castle Siege and Halo: Spartan strike, productivity apps, like Word, Excel or PowerPoint, and photo apps, like the 3 useful apps listed below.

1. Microsoft Pix – Enjoy the moment, instead of struggling to capture it.

Microsoft Pix is a smart camera app for iOS that will help you take better photos. How? By using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automatically adjust various settings and enhance your photos. You don’t have to struggle with the settings to get a great shot, just let the app’s AI do all the adjustments and "enjoy life’s moments instead of struggling to capture them."

Microsoft Pix – Main Features
  • Smart capture – the AI automatically tweaks settings, enhances images, and selects the best shots.
  • People-centric – when faces are detected, Microsoft Pix automatically adjusts settings and after-shot enhancements to make everyone look their best.
  • Live Images – when motion is detected, Microsoft Pix creates a short looping video called a Live Image (similar to Apple’s Live Photos).
  • Hyperlapse – automatically stabilizes videos for smoother playback; videos can be time-lapsed and saved at many different speeds.
  • Free – available for free on Apple’s App Store (requires iOS 9.0 or later).

2. Microsoft Selfie – Nobody likes to look bad in a selfie.

By using computer vision technology and machine learning, this app can make your selfies look better. After all, nobody likes to look bad in a selfie, right?

Microsoft Selfie analyzes your portrait, taking various factors into consideration, such as age, gender, skin tone, and lighting. Once it’s done, it can automatically enhance your selfie. This means it can reduce noise and remove imperfections such as spots and blemishes.

Microsoft Selfie – Main Features
  • Intelligent portrait enhancement – enhances your portrait by intelligently considering age, gender, skin tone and lighting.
  • Noise reduction – Denoise mode turns on automatically in low light conditions.
  • Auto exposure – automatic exposure correction and photo clarifying, especially for backlit photos.
  • Filters – manually add filters to your photos to customize the way they look.
  • Share – share your selfies via Facebook, Twitter, WeChat, Mail, Message, or any other iOS app that provides support for sharing.
  • Free – available for free on Apple’s App Store (requires iOS 8.0 or later).

Did you know that Microsoft’s Selfie app was downloaded 500,000 times in the first two weeks after it launched?

3. Office Lens – Turns photos into editable documents.

What this free capture app does is it turns your iPhone into a very useful pocket scanner. You see, you can use it to take photos of business cards, receipts, whiteboards, and other documents. And once you’ve taken a photo, Office Lens will turn it into an editable file: Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx) or PDF (.pdf).

Office Lens – Main Features
  • Capture – use Office Lens to take pictures of receipts, business cards, whiteboards, or documents.
  • Edit – the app recognizes a document’s corners and automatically crops, enhances and cleans up the image.
  • OCR – take a picture of a document and the app will use OCR to recognize the text. You can then edit the text and search within the text.
  • Convert – images of paper documents and whiteboard notes can be converted into Word documents, PowerPoint presentations and PDF files.
  • Contacts – by taking a photo of a business card you can generate and add a new contact to your phone.
  • Cloud storage – save images to OneNote, OneDrive, or another cloud storage service.
  • Free – available for free on Apple’s App Store (requires iOS 8.0 or later).

Office Lens is also available for Android on Google Play and for Windows on Microsoft’s Store.
