Microsoft Security Essentials, the free security software solution that provides malware protection to individual Windows users and small businesses (as of October 2010), celebrated its first anniversary the other day. The first MSE Beta version, as you may recall, was released back in June 2009. The application graduated out of Beta on the 29th of September, 2009.

To celebrate MSE’s first anniversary, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft released a few statistics about the free security software solution. Check them out below.

Popularity
In one year MSE has been installed on more than 31 million machines in 74 different countries around the world. Out of those 31 million installations, 27 million computers protected by MSE reported infections to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC).

Microsoft Security Essentials will come pre-installed on the HP ENVY 14 series and HP ENVY 14 Beats™ edition series PCs.

Protection
Over the past year, Microsoft Security Essentials detected nearly 400 million threats.

Virus Bulletin (highly reputable testing organization in the industry whose goal is to measure the detection effectiveness and quality of antivirus products) gave MSE a VB100 award this August.

AV-TEST (an independent antivirus research and data security organization) said that MSE passed its test and received an AV-Test certificate – also this August.

Microsoft Security Essentials is certified by International Computer Security Association Labs (ICSA) and West Coast Labs, two of the industry’s leading independent certification authorities.

Microsoft Security Essentials received the PC Advisor Awards 2010 - Best Free Software award and is rated by Consumer Reports as a “Best Buy”.

A grand total of 2,071,061 infected machines were reported to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center in the US. Here’s how other countries fair up when it comes to reporting infected machines to the MMPC:
