Next Tuesday, on the 11th of August, Microsoft will roll out an update for the Windows operating system, Office productivity suite, and a few other applications as part of the Patch Tuesday program (updates are released each month, on the second Tuesday of the month). The August 2009 Patch Tuesday update will encompass a total of 9 security bulletins.

Out of the 9 security bulletins, 5 have received the “critical” security rating, meaning that if successfully exploited by a person with malicious intent, they could allow for remote code execution. The remaining 4 bulletins are rated as “important” and according to Microsoft they allow for “elevation of privilege.”

The vast majority of bulletins apply to the Windows operating system. On behalf of the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), Jerry Bryant, explains: “Those [9] bulletins consist of:
- 8 bulletins affecting Windows five of which are rated critical and three are rated as important. One of the critical Windows bulletins also affects Client for Mac. One of the important Windows bulletins also affects the .NET Framework.
- One critical bulletin affecting Microsoft Office, Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft ISA Server and Microsoft BizTalk Server.

After getting the update it will be necessary to restart your computer. All of the updates, apart from the .NET Framework one, require a restart. The Office-related update may not require an update as well, assuming of course that the binaries being updated are not in use. Otherwise it will require a restart as well.

As a little recap, the August 2009 Patch Tuesday update applies to the following:
Windows operating system
Microsoft Office
.NET Framework
Microsoft Visual Studio
Microsoft ISA Server
Microsoft BizTalk Server

Adobe was supposed to roll out updates for its products on the same day as Microsoft. But because it released an out-of-band patch for critical vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Flash Player 9 and 10 at the end of July, the company announced that the next security update for Reader and Acrobat will be rolled out on the 13th of October.
