At the start of the week Microsoft explained that it wants users from 131 markets across the world to be able to upgrade to Windows 8 once the operating system reaches General Availability (GA). That is why it will run a promotion and give Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users the opportunity to download a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for the low price of $39.99. Windows 8 Pro is the Windows 8 edition meant to be used in a business environment by professionals.

To sweeten the deal, Microsoft even threw in Windows Media Center for free. After you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, you can get Windows Media Center for free via the “add features” option.

The Windows 8 upgrade will be made available for purchase on the Windows.com website. To help you switch from your current Windows version to Windows 8 Pro, a Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant will show up and guide you through the upgrade process – the whole process, from purchasing the upgrade to downloading it onto your machine to installing it.

“We believe that your upgrade experience in Windows 8 will be a breeze by offering a faster experience, a single upgrade path, and compatibility from prior versions of Windows,” explained Microsoft’s Brandon LeBlanc. “We have simplified the Windows upgrade experience with the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant which supports you during your upgrade with everything from selecting your language to pausing your download to built-in compatibility checks - it’s seamless,” he added.

This “upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99” promo runs through January 31st, 2013. During this period a packaged DVD version of the Windows 8 Pro upgrade will be available for purchase in local stores for $69.99.
