Mac OS X in the Crosshairs of another Trojan
Mac OS X systems from Apple, besides being some of the most efficient operating systems around are also considered to be very safe. Even though this operating system is pretty much bulletproof, there are some Trojans out there, such as the OSX.Lamzev.A, that try to break through the defenses and infect the system. Mac OS X may have a very good security armor on, but this is not to say that it is flawless; there are some cracks in it, much to the chagrin of Mac users.
Graham Cluley from Sophos, company that specializes in antivirus and antispam security software development, comments: “As with RSPlug, this most recent Trojan horse is being spread in an unoriginal way. Joe User visits a website expecting to see a video of something pornographic, but is told that they have to install a ‘missing Video ActiveX object’ before it can be viewed. The downloaded software, however, is in reality a piece of Mac OS X malware.”
About one month ago we were reporting on another Mac malware threat, the one posed by the MacGuard and Winiguard web pages. These sites advertised security software solutions for Mac OS users and enticed them to download and install some soft of security application on their machines. I say “some sort of” because it was anything but security software.
The differences between the two malware programs are “immense”. You will get infected with the Lamezev.A Trojan if you want to get an adrenaline rush by visiting some shady porn sites. Any user, be it a Mackie, a Windows aficionado, or an Ubuntu fan, knows that visiting web pages featuring adult content comes with a risk – the risk of getting some sort of malware. The MacGuard and Winiguard malware on the other hand targets people that want an added level of security to use on their Mac OS X machines (perhaps people who know they will be up for some porn surfing later in the day).
