Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, the next iteration of the Mac OS X-based operating system, the one that Apple announced it would be released this September and would cost you $29 to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and $169 to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Several versions of the Snow Leopard operating system can be pre-ordered from Amazon, mainly:
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD-ROM for $29
Mac OS X Snow Leopard Family Pack – 5 users, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD-ROM for $49.
Mac OS X Server 10.6 Snow Leopard - Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard DVD-ROM for $499
Mac Box Set – Macintosh, Mac OS X DVD-ROM for $169
Mac Box Set Family Pack – 5 users, Macintosh, Mac OS X DVD-ROM for $229

Please note that the operating system became available for pre-order this Saturday, August 1st. Apple has not provided a specific release date for the Snow Leopard – it said Mac OS X 10.6 would be released this September, but did not provide a precise date.

Also note that the $29 upgrade is available for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard users. If you are a Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger user, you cannot perform an in-place upgrade; you have no choice but to get the $169 package that comes with Snow Leopard and iWork and iLife thrown in for good measure.

And to convince you to get your Mac OS X 10.6 pre-order in right away, here are some Snow Leopard highlights:
- Enhanced responsiveness and improved reliability.
- Support for Microsoft Exchange 2007.
- A more responsive Finder, faster Mail load times (85% faster according to Apple) and speedier searches (90% speedier, according to Apple, of course).
- 50% faster initial backup for Time Machine.
- Expose integration in Dock.
- Safari 4, the 64-bit processor version, comes with an estimated 50% Nitro JavaScript performance boost and is reportedly better suited to handle plug-in crashes.
- 64-bit computing for nearly every system app.
- QuickTime X will come bundled with the OS.
- Support for all Intel Macs.
