Apple has recently updated the Leopard OS to version 10.5.6 , which may put a big smile on Mac OS X users, but will have a negative impact on your jailbreaking the iPhone OS 2.2 . The thing is that if you want to jailbreak the iPhone you need to put the device in DFU mode, but your recently updated Mac OS X will not recognize it and hence make it impossible to use the Pwnage Tool. In related news, the dev team is close to releasing a proper soft unlock for the iPhone 3G (should be here on New Year’s Eve).

There have been some online rumors going on about Apple having done something with Mac OS X 10.5.6 that would interfere with jailbreaking or unlocking the iPhone 3G. According to the Dev Team this information is not accurate; the DFU issues that users are experiencing are due to a kernel bug. There are three possible workarounds, but they are not exactly foolproof (there are certain risks involved and as the Dev Team put it, “try it at your own risk”).

You need to replace some files within IOUSBFamily.kext with older ones included in Mac OS X 10.5.5. and then rebuild kextcache. There is a reason why this explanation seems complicated – it is not something to be tackled by anyone that does not properly understand the process, only by someone who has the adequate technological knowledge to accomplish it. Best stay away from this workaround.

Instead of connecting the iPhone 3G directly to your machine, try placing an USB hub in the middle and then (re)insert the device’s USB cable. Straight from the horse’s mouth, here is the third and final proposed workaround: “Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!”

The current iPhone jailbreak is not a proper soft lock, but the Dev Team say they are getting there: “We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.” The thing is that the unlock will only work if you did not update your iPhone’s baseband, and if you have already jailbroken your iPhone.
