The Mac App Store, the App Store announced by Apple in December and launched to the public on the 6th of January, once again makes the headlines. This is because the Mac App Store turned out to be a big, big success. How big of a success was it? Here are some numbers to put things in perspective: in one day after the Mac App Store’s launch, more than 1 million downloads were recorded.

To put it in other words, in just one day after the launch of the new Mac App Store, users downloaded more than 1,000,000 apps.

“We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is.”

Steve Jobs previously said “we think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps.” Turns out he was right and users really took to the Mac App Store.

There are currently more than 1,000 free and paid apps in the Mac App Store. All these apps are sorted in categories like Education, Games, Graphics & Design, Lifestyle, Productivity and Utilities.

Like the App Store for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, the Mac App Store allows you to browse paid and free apps with ease. If you find an app that seems interesting, you can view customer ratings and reviews. If you don’t know what app to check out, you can find out what’s hot or view staff favorites. Once you’ve made your choice you can easily purchase, download and install apps. The apps, which will be updated via the Mac App Store, can be run on all of your personal Macs.

One of the apps you can find in the Mac App Store is the recently released Twitter for Mac client.

The Mac App Store is available for Snow Leopard users through Software Update as part of Mac OS X 10.6.6.
