The first good news for all the Linux Mint fans out there is that Linux Mint 12 codename “Lisa” has graduated out of RC (Release Candidate). This weekend the team behind Lisa was proud to announce that the final version of Linux Mint 12 has been rolled out to the public. If you’re already on Linux Mint 12 RC, just apply any level 1 and level 2 updates and the level 3 “mate” and “caja” updates. If you’re not on Linux Mint 12 RC, you can get the operating system straight from Linux Mint here.

Linux Mint 12 comes with several new features. It comes with a new desktop built with Gnome 3 and MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions). It lets you run Gnome 2 and 3 on the same system thanks to MATE, a fork of Gnome 2 that is compatible with Gnome 3. It comes new theme. And last but not least, it comes with a new default search engine: DuckDuckGo.

And so we get to the second Linux Mint-related news I wanted to report: the Linux Mint announced this weekend that it signed a new partnership with DuckDuckGo, a search engine that puts the emphasis on privacy by not collect and does not sharing your personal information. There is no search history, personal profile or any other information about you gathered, stored, sold, used or leaked. Other search engines use the information they have on you to present personalized search results. DuckDuckGo doesn’t do that.

“In Linux Mint 12, DuckDuckGo is now the default search engine,” explained the Linux Mint team. “Similar to Linux, it comes with a learning curve. You can use it easily, but you’ll need to go through a bit of reading to understand its power and how to make the most of it. Of course, if you’d rather use what you’re familiar with, we made it easy for you to switch away and add other search engines in Linux Mint.”
