Petra! The name of the upcoming Linux Mint 16 modern, elegant and comfortable operating system will be Petra, from the Greek word 'πέτρα' that means rock or stone.

Less than a month after rolling out the stable version of Linux Mint 15 Olivia, the most ambitious release since the start of the Linux Mint project, some light is shed on the upcoming Linux Mint 16, version that should be released to the public by the end of November, 2013. Lead Linux Mint developer Clem Lefebvre announced that version 16 will carry the codename Petra. A common name in Germany, Croatia, Hungary and the Czech Republic, the name Petra comes from the Greek word for rock or stone – πέτρα.

Clem Lefebvre explained that there will be 4 Linux Mint 16 Petra editions to choose from. And more to the point, there will be a Cinnamon, a MATE, a KDE, and an Xfce edition.

Speaking about that, it should be mentioned that Linux Mint 15 KDE RC and Linux Mint 15 Xfce RC have recently been released to the public. These editions come with the following new features:
  • KDE 4.10 and Xfce 4.10
  • MDM features a GTK, a themeable GMD and a new HTML greeter.
  • New MintSources tool replaces software-properties-gtk .
  • New MintDrivers tool that lets you manage your drivers.
  • Software Manager received some new features and bug fixes.
  • Update Manager can refresh the APT cache in user mode without any user intervention.
  • Slightly improved look and feel for the Welcome Screen.
  • A collection of beautiful background photographs from 12 different artists.
  • Upstream components: Ubuntu 13.04 package base, Linux 3.8 kernel, MDM 1.2.
