The team behind the popular open-source Linux Mint operating system (OS) announced this weekend that Lisa, Linux Mint 12 codename “Lisa” to be more precise, has been released to the public as a Release Candidate (RC). If you would like to get Lisa RC, there are plenty of download links on the Linux Mint blog here.

The OS works on any computer that has a 32 or 64-bit processor, at least 512MB of RAM, 5GB of disk space, a graphics card capable of 800x600 resolution, and a CD/DVD or USB port. If you would like to find out what new bits and pieces Lisa RC has to offer, keep reading below as I will quickly present what’s new in Linux Mint 12 RC.

Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” RC New Features (in list form to keep things nice and short):

Brand new look

A new desktop built with Gnome 3 and MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions. To get a pure Gnome 3 experience, just disable all components within MGSE. Or enable them all for a Mint-focused experience.

“The Linux Mint 12 desktop is a mix of old and new. It’s a brand new desktop but with traditional components. The new technology in Gnome 3 is exciting but the components contributed by MGSE make users feel at home. Linux Mint 12, like previous releases, and despite the fact that it's based on Gnome 3, looks and behaves like a Mint desktop,” says the Linux Mint team.

Run Gnome 2 and 3 with MATE

You can run Gnome 2 and 3 on the same system thanks to MATE, a fork of Gnome 2 that is compatible with Gnome 3. MATE is included in the DVD edition of Lisa; it can be installed on the CD edition via the mint-meta-mate package. Please note that MATE is missing a few parts and is not completely stable yet.

New theme
Mint-Z is the name of the new Mint-X and Zukitwo-based theme used by Lisa.

New default search engine
The new default search engine in Linux Mint 12 RC is Duck Duck Go.
