Getting an individual membership with the Linux Foundation comes with plenty of perks and extra perks that more than make up for the $99 price tag. Here are the regular perks:

• - 35% off O’Reilly books and e-books.
• - 35% off No Starch Press Publications.
• - 15% off subscriptions to Linux Journal
• - 30% discount on the Linux Foundation’s LinuxCon and Japan Linux Symposium events
• - 20% discount on registration fees for Linux Foundation training courses
• - For every $40 order from ThinkGeek.com you will get $10 off
• - Free Linux Foundation T-shirt, weekly “Linux Briefing Book”, your own Linux.com email address.

And here are the extra perks (announced by the Linux Foundation this October):

• - Employee purchase pricing from HP, Lenovo and Dell: a discount of up to 40% for Lenovo devices , standard employee purchase pricing from HP and Dell. Linux Foundation members will also get a best price guarantee from Dell.
• - With a one time fee of $150 you can make your Linux.com email address permanent. This means that even if you do not renew your Linux Foundation individual membership, you get to keep the Linux.com email account for life. Please note that the offer applies to existing members. New members will have to pay a total of $249 which includes the lifetime Linux.com email account and the first year’s membership.
• - Students can become Linux Foundation members for just $25 with a student-class membership.

I’ve highlighted the word “students” to draw attention to the following. The Linux Foundation is running a holiday promotion that goes something like this: you get an individual membership and a student gets a free membership. New individual members can choose to sponsor a student, any student. Or they can specify which student will get the free membership. In this regard they need to list the student's name and email address in the order comments on the checkout page.

Executive Director with the Linux Foundation, Jim Zemlin, explains: “Individual members are the heartbeat of the Linux Foundation, and students bring to the table new ideas and energy required to advance Linux into a new decade. New members who join during our holiday program will get the additional benefit of contributing to the advancement of Linux by bringing the next-generation of architects, maintainers and experts into the community”
