Popular social networking and micro-blogging service Twitter announced this week that it updated the official Twitter for Android app to version 2.1.1. The exciting thing is that the app comes with two new features. The first exciting new feature is Push Notifications.

Push Notifications isn’t something new, we’ve known about them for some time now. But they are new for the Twitter for Android app. Get the latest version of Twitter for Android, or update the app if you’re already on it, and you will receive Twitter updates instantly, no matter what you’re doing on your Android-powered device. To receive Push Notifications you must access your account’s settings, select “Automatic refresh” and then select the option to receive updates for Direct Messages, @Mentions, and Tweets.

Another exciting new feature the latest version of Twitter for Android has to offer is support for multiple accounts. If you have multiple Twitter accounts, you don’t have to log into one, then log out, and then log into another account. You can log into multiple accounts and then switch between them.

There’s a third new thing that Twitter for Android has to offer, which isn’t that exciting but still, it deserves mentioning: the appearance of home screen widgets has been updated.

The official Twitter for Android app is available for download on the Android Market here.

And speaking of apps, Twitter announced earlier this week that there are more than 1 million registered apps out there, apps that have been developed by some 750,000 international developers. Twitter explained at the time that new Twitter apps are registered at a rate of 1 ever 1.5 seconds. The growth of Twitter apps is quite impressive. I mean just a year ago there were some 150,000 Twitter apps out there and now there are more than 1 million. Just goes to show you how popular Twitter is.
