Kaspersky Lab, developer of security software that protects against malware, hackers and spam and one of the largest antivirus companies in Europe, announced yesterday, the 5th of September, that it entered a partnership with Emerging Threats Pro, leading developer of secure content and threat management solutions. Kaspersky Lab explained that this partnership translates to better protection for all.

Here’s a longer explanation on what “better security for all” means. As you may already know, and if you don’t I’m going to tell you right now, Emerging Threats Pro is the developer behind a professional grade IDS and IPS ruleset for Snort and Suricata based on and supporting the Emerging Threats open source project. The aforementioned ruleset puts the spotlight on malware, major vulnerabilities, and offers known bad IP lists and IP/DNS reputation feeds.

Kaspersky Lab said it will use that ruleset for its in-lab internal research work and that it will collaborate with Emerging Treats Pro on exchanging malware samples and on extending the ruleset’s coverage. Data has already started being fed by Kaspersky Lab into Emerging Threats Pro with the aim of improving the ruleset. By improving the ruleset, the overall aim is to make the internet a safer place for everyone.

Director of Anti-Malware Research at Kaspersky Lab, Nikita Shvetsov, had this to comment on the partnership:
“We are happy to be collaborating with the Emerging Threats Pro Team, the open source team to go to for the best IDS/IPS ruleset. Our combined efforts will produce expertise synergies for both organizations to optimize our signatures, which will then trickle down to better Internet security for all.”

And CEO of Emerging Threats Pro, Matt Jonkman, had the following to add:
“Our team is excited about the collaboration with Kaspersky Lab. The IDS and anti-virus industries are fighting the same battle, so working closely together as non-competitive companies only makes sense - to strengthen both our organizations’ expertise and offerings.”
