Redmond-based software giant Microsoft announced that on Tuesday, the 12th of July 2011, it will roll out four bulletins as part of its Patch Tuesday program (patches and fixes for Microsoft products are released every second Tuesday of the month). These security bulletins are meant to address a grand total of 22 vulnerabilities that plague its Windows operating system and its Office productivity suite.

Out of the four security bulletins, one carries the 'critical' rating while the other three are rated as 'important'. Microsoft uses the critical rating (usually) when it deals with vulnerabilities whose exploitation could allow the propagation of an Internet worm without user action. The important rating is used when dealing with vulnerabilities whose exploitation could result in compromise of the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of users’ data, or of the integrity or availability of processing resources.

The bulletin rated as critical will address vulnerabilities that plague the Windows Vista and the Windows 7 operating system and could lead to remote code execution. The bulletins rated as important address issues that affect Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008, and could lead to elevation of privilege. One bulletin rated as important addresses problems with Microsoft Visio 2003 SP3, problems that could lead to remote code execution.

An advance notification for the July 2011 Patch Tuesday has been posted online by Microsoft; you can check it out here if you would like to learn more about the bulletins Microsoft will roll out this Tuesday.

Back in June, Microsoft released 16 security bulletins as part of the Patch Tuesday program. Those bulletins addressed 34 vulnerabilities that affected the Windows operating system, the Office productivity suite, the Internet Explorer web browser and other Microsoft products. Out of the 34 bulletins, 9 were rated as 'critical' and 7 as 'important'.
