Jailbreaking the iPhone: PwnageTool 3.1.4, blackra1n, Unjailbreakable iPhone 3GS

Earlier this month Cupertino-based software developer Apple released iPhone Os 3.1.2 (an update that addressed a few bugs – see here) and every iPhone user who cared about jailbreaking and unlocking the device was advised not to update. Some time has passed since then and this issue has been addressed.

The iPhone Dev Team said, when the iPhone OS 3.1.2 was released, that PwnageTool is not compatible with the latest version of the operating system. They also said that they’re hard at work and an updated version would be released soon. That time is now – PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac provides iPhone OS 3.1.2 support for the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 1G and iPod Touch 2G.

Here is the PwnageTool 3.1.4 summary the iPhone Dev Team provided:
  • The iPhone 3GS is now supported out of the box in PwnageTool 3.1.4 (or if you have upgraded to 3.1.x in iTunes)
  • The iPod 2G is still supported in PwnageTool 3.1.4 but you must already be jailbroken (we’ll update this if there’s a big demand from non-jailbroken ipt2G owners)
  • The iPod touch 3G is NOT supported

PwnageTool 3.1.4 is available for Mac OS X user, but what bout Windows users? They can use the universal (works with Windows and Mac OS X) jailbreak tool that George Hotz released a few days ago: blackra1n. George Hotz, the one that hacked into Apple’s first iPhone back in 2007, describes blackra1n as a “a 30 second ALL device 3.1.2 jailbreak. Even the ipt3, but the ipt3 is tethered. In order to boot it, just rerun blackra1n.”

And now, here come the bad news: the newest iPhone 3GS models being shipped by Apple come with an updated boot firmware, iBoot-359.3.2. The bad news is that the new bootrom makes it impossible to exploit 24kpwn to jailbreak the device. The 24kpwn exploit was until now used to break into the device and gain deeper access to unlock features and install new apps. According to the Dev Team, jailbreaking these devices will be possible only if a new exploit is found.

UPDATE: The new iPhone 3GS devices can still be jailbroken. Blocking the 24kpwn exploit is not a complete roadblock preventing users from jailbreaking their iPhone 3GS, it is more of a bump in the road. The newly shipped 3GS phones can be jailbroken via a tethered jailbreak. This means you have to connect the iPhone 3GS to your computer and have to run a certain procedure each time you turn it on. A means of jailbreaking the new iPhone 3GS hardware has already been uncovered by the iPhone Dev Team, so expect it to be implemented in a new version of PwnageTool in the future – this means you won’t have to go through the hassle of a tethered jailbreak.
