Mid-November there was a rumor going on that Apple will update the operating system for the iPhone; the rumor turned out to be true and the iPhone was indeed updated to v.2.2. Now that the iPhone OS 2.2 is here, the iPhone Dev Team had to update its jailbreak tool, PwnageTool and QuickPwn, so as to meet the current demand for an unlocked iPhone.

The thing with the OS 2.2 update is that it also updates the device’s baseband, which means that your previously jailbroken iPhone will be locked once again. What the Dev Team proposes, so as to keep having an unlocked iPhone with the option of future soft-unlocks, is using the PwnageTool for the update. The iPhone will indeed be updated to OS 2.2, but thanks to the PwnageTool and the custom .ipsw file it provides, the baseband will not be altered (it will stay to version 2.1).

In layman’s terms, get the full functionality and the great features of OS 2.2, but keep the 2.1 baseband that allows you to use the iPhone regardless of your mobile carrier. There are several improvements in OS 2.2 that should determine you to upgrade: Google Street View, walking and public transit directions, dropped pins address display, email shared locations, a more stable and safer Safari browser, auto-correction, podcast downloads, and so on.

A word of warning for those of you that are using unlocked versions of the iPhone: do not update to OS 2.2 if you have any doubts that the current jailbreak will not have the desired effect. “When a software update is released and presented to you within iTunes the baseband is sometimes updated (to fix bugs or add new features). The 2.2 update for the iPhone 3G contains such an update, so running the vanilla updater straight away with iTunes will reprogram and update the baseband. This could be bad for certain people, depending on your ultimate aim,” explains the Dev Team blog .
