Microsoft proclaimed that it is time for a new Windows and introduced Windows 10, a new version that was built from the ground-up with a simple goal in mind: to empower people and organizations to do great things.

“Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows, unlocking new experiences to give customers new ways to work, play and connect,” said Terry Myerson, executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft. “This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead.”

Great news for the 1.5+ billion people around the world that use the Windows operating system: Microsoft is working on Windows 10, a new Windows version that will, basically, put previous versions to shame.

Windows 10 is built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world. Windows 10 is meant to help users be productive. Windows 10 is designed to offer the best possible user experience on a wide range of devices, from devices that have a small 4-inch screen to devices that have large 80-inch screens, to devices that have no screen at all.

“Windows 10 will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time. It will be our most comprehensive platform ever,” said Terry Myerson.

Windows 10 – Main New Features
  • Start Menu – the Start Menu is back! Lots of people complained that Microsoft replaced the Start Menu with the Start Screen on Windows 8. Well, not only is the Start Menu back on Windows 10, it comes with a new customizable space for your favorite apps and Live Tiles.
  • Search – search is back as well! You will find it in the aforementioned Start Menu and in the taskbar.
  • Snap – get smart suggestions when you snap a window, snap four apps on the same screen, view other running apps and programs for additional snapping options.
  • Task View – the taskbar features a new task view button; click it to quickly switch between open files; click it to access any desktop you want.
  • Desktops – you are not restricted to one desktop, you can create two or more desktops and then easily switch from one desktop to another.
  • Apps – apps from the Windows Store don't run in full screen by default anymore; they open in the same format that desktop programs do and they feature the same maximize, minimize and close buttons. This means you can resize them, move them around the desktop, easily minimize them, and easily close them.
Windows 10 Technical Preview available October 1

On October 1, via the Windows Insider Program, Microsoft will release a Windows 10 Technical Preview for desktops and laptops. Technical previews of Windows Server and Windows management tools will be released soon after.

PC experts, IT pros, and diehard fans are invited to get the technical preview of Windows 10 for desktops and laptops via the Windows Insider Program. They can test the new Windows 10 and help Microsoft shape the new Windows 10.
