The web is a dangerous place, regardless if you are on the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system or the Apple-developed Mac OS X. There are security threats that target the Windows as well as the Mac user. That is why the user needs to get a properly good security software solution to keep his data and his system safe and secure.

Intego, company that specializes in providing security solutions for Mac, recently announced that its VirusBarrier X6 security software solution, besides offering protection against Mac-specific security threats, also offers protection against Windows security threats. This is a good thing considering that there are many Mac users who run Windows in a virtualization program and there are many Mac users who interact with Windows users (sharing files and things of the sort).

“While VirusBarrier X6 is first and foremost a tool to protect Macs from the dangers of the Internet, it has the ability to spot and eradicate Windows malware as well. Especially in an enterprise environment, it is essential to spot malware before it gets to the computers it can affect, and VirusBarrier X6 does this by ensuring that Mac users don’t propagate malware to Windows-using colleagues,” said Intego.

How good is VirusBarrier X6 at protecting Mac users from Windows malware? Intego cited the French site clubic.com who put Intego’s security solution and 3 other Mac antimalware programs to the test. The other 4 programs were Kaspersky Antivirus, Norton Antivirus 11 and McAfee Internet Security.

Out of 635 threats, VirusBarrier managed to detect a grand total of 633. The other antimalware programs did not do as well as VirusBarrier X6.

Here’s an image to put things in perspective.

“The results show that VirusBarrier X6 is the clear winner. Out of 635 samples tested, VirusBarrier X6 detected 633 of them, or 99.69% of them. (Drats; we’re trying to find out which two samples we missed so we can do better next time.) The second-placed program wasn’t even close. With only 573 detections, it missed 60 of the test samples, for only a 90% detection rate,” said Intego.

The conclusion is clear: if you want a properly good security software solution to protect your Mac from Mac-specific threats and Windows malware, get VirusBarrier X6.
