Improve Your Mac Experience with 3 Useful Apps

No matter if you use a PC running on Windows Vista, or you have a Mac Mini running on Mac OS X, there is one thing that can enrich your overall user experience: the software that you decide to install and run on your operating system. You will have to wait until 2009 to try out the upcoming Mac OS X 10.6, the Snow Leopard, but there is no wait necessary for the software applications I am going to present.

The first software product that I want to bring to your attention is Quicksilver. This freeware program from Blacktree Software is very similar to LaunchBar or Butler in that it lets you launch applications swiftly by simply typing on the keyboard, it lets you control files, run scripts, send out messages, and other forms of data manipulation. It is a complex piece of software that is not too hard to master, and to my mind Apple should provide their Mac OS X bundled with it. At this point in time Mac operating systems come with Spotlight built-in, and I am not saying that the software is bad, it just a bit outdated.

The second piece of software that you should be made aware of if you want to enrich your user experience is VirtualBox. As the name suggests, this program is a virtualization tool, but what is it good for? Well, there are times when you will want to visit a certain web page, but much to your chagrin you will discover that the development geniuses behind it made sure it will work only in Internet Explorer (IE 8 RC1 is due to drop at the beginning of 2009, just like the Snow Leopard). With VirtualBox you can run Windows on your Mac, and thus access that web page. It will also come in handy when for some reason you need to get some work done and you must absolutely do it in Windows.

When you are all done with the two programs presented above, you might want to celebrate by listening to a song or two. But annoyingly enough the music on your machine, the one you bought a while ago from iTunes, no longer wants to play. FairGame from Seidai Software is a simple application that will take the shackles off the music that Apple has locked down.
