The team behind computational knowledge engine Wolfram Alpha announced on Monday, July 9th, that after “going back to the drawing board”, they managed to come up with an exciting, redesigned front page. Visit wolframalpha.com right now and in the upper right hand corner you will see a prompt that invites you to “Discover hundreds of illustrated example on our new front page.”

That’s what the aforementioned exciting, redesigned front page has to offer – hand-drawn sketches that you can interact with and thus learn more. Click on the sketch that looks like the Eiffel tower for example and you will be presented with a prompt that says “How tall is the Eiffel Tower?” That is, of course an easy question that Wolfram Alpha has no problem answering. And it will answer it if you click the sketch.

The Wolfram Alpha team explains how it came up with the idea for the new front page:

“We’ve gone through our Examples page and illustrated some of our favorite queries to provide our users with a brand new way to experience Wolfram|Alpha and learn interesting facts. Each of the nearly 300 custom sketches refers to just one example taken from Wolfram|Alpha’s vast knowledge base, and clicking one will take you directly to a corresponding results page. This not only allows visitors to easily explore a wide variety of knowledge, but it also acts as an interactive starting point for those looking to learn more about the answers Wolfram|Alpha can provide.”

I mentioned above that if you go to wolframalpha.com you will see a prompt that invites you to check out the new front page. Wolfram Alpha fans who already selected a custom background, will not see this prompt. To access the new front page that features interactive, hand-drawn sketches, these users need to click Settings from the upper right hand corner, then select the new design.
