How to Jailbreak your iPhone OS 2.2 in Seven Easy Steps

As we have recently reported, the development team from Apple has recently released OS v. 2.2, while the people at the iPhone Dev Team have updated their jailbreak software as a countermeasure. The following how-to type article is meant to aid those of you that want to update the operating system to version 2.2, while at the same time having the liberty to use a software restriction-free iPhone.

The first thing that we must start with is a word of warning (several words actually). The current jailbreak is not a proper soft iPhone 3G unlock, so if you are planning to soft-unlock your device in the future, then you are better off not using the QuickPwn 2.2 tool. Also, do not update your iPhone to the official OS 2.2 without PwnageTool 2.2. It is crucial that you understand this now, before you get to the actual jailbreaking.

Follow these simple steps in order to jailbreak your iPhone. Keep in mind that this guide also works with 2G devices.

Step 1
Follow the links provided here and download OS 2.2 firmware. Save the files onto your desktop.

Step 2
Follow the link provided at the bottom of the article and download PwnageTool 2.2. If you did not realize this up to this point, the tool does not work on Windows-based systems, just on Mac OS X ones.

Step 3
Launch PwnageTool –> click on “Expert Mode” –> Select the current version of iPhone you are using. Click “Next” and let the tool detect the OS 2.2 firmware you downloaded earlier. Once it does so, select it.

Step 4
Click “Next” -> “General” –> “Next”. This is when you have to click on “Activate” if you are using the iPhone without an official agreement with a carrier; if you have an iPhone contract with a mobile carrier, do not click on “Activate”. Next you must modify the size of the Root Partition to 1,000MB.

Step 5
Keep clicking “Next” until you reach the “Build” screen. Click “Build” -> “Next” -> Save “iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Custom_Restore.ipsw” onto your desktop (that is the name the custom restore file should have).
After waiting a while for the software to create a custom version of the OS 2.2 firmware, you will be asked if the iPhone has been Pwned before – answer truthfully.

Step 6
Connect the iPhone to your Mac OS X powered machine and enter “Restore Mode” (Power + Home). Click “OK” when a blue window informs you that you were successful. Exit PwnageTool 2.2 when you get the message “I Can Haz Success”.

Step 7
Launch iTunes and click “OK” when you are prompted about restoring your iPhone. When you click “Restore”, make sure to hold down the “Option” key. Select “iPhone1,2_2.1_5F136_Custom_Restore.ipsw” that should be stored on the desktop and then open it. After some considerable waiting you will be informed that your iPhone was restored (click “OK”). After iTunes recognizes the iPhone, disconnect it and then use a backup to restore iPhone data. That is it!

“Of course, if you have and original iPhone, don’t care about unlocking your iPhone 3G, or have a Windows machine and don’t care about unlocking your iPhone 3G, you can easily jailbreak iPhone 2.2 OS using QuickPwn,” says Will Park from IntoMobile .
