How to Get the Official Windows 7 Beta 1
Today is the big day, the day when Microsoft will finally release the official Beta version of Windows 7, and the question on everyone’s lips is “how do I go about getting it”? Looking back, perhaps it would have been a good idea to subscribe to TechNet Plus or MSDN and get it ahead of time.
Communications Manager with the Windows Client Communications Team, Brandon LeBlanc explains: “The Windows 7 Beta is going to be available download-only (we’re not sending out physical media), and available for a limited time to the first 2.5 million people who download the beta. The Windows 7 Beta will be available in English, German, Japanese, Arabic, and Hindi, and each language will be available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions (except Hindi, which will only be available in 32-bit). Because the Windows 7 Beta will be offered download-only, it will be provided to you as an ISO image (an .iso file) that you download.”
The number 2.5 million is indeed a large number, if your counting grains of sand, not if your counting how many Windows running PCs are out there, so it goes without saying that people will be fighting over this download. Luckily enough there are a few tricks that you can employ. The first one is to know the exact link where Windows 7 will go live (it will be posted here). Then you will have to register with Microsoft in order to get a product key for Windows 7 (no info on this one just yet).
If you do not make the cut, the only alternative left to you is to “go pirate” and by that I mean the CES Windows 7 Beta 1 version is already available on the Swedish torrent tracker The Pirate Bay and other torrent trackers as well (labeled .Technet.TAP.700.). As a matter of fact, it has been available for some time now, so you can forget about Microsoft and they 2.5 million download limitations and their Friday release and just go to the pub. One more reason to go get a cold one instead of waiting in front of your PC si provided by this Microsoft statement on Windows 7 Beta 1 - "is roughly equivalent to the Ultimate edition of Windows Vista."
