How Not to Use Social Networking Site Facebook: Nude Pictures
Social networking site Facebook, which just turned 5 years old recently, keeps making the news for all the wrong reasons. I am not talking about the Facebook policy changes which caused quite a stir amongst users, I am talking about people that are willing to maliciously exploit it for their own interests. A computer administrator that used to work for the University of Massachusetts has been charged with illegally obtaining nude pictures from the Facebook accounts of some 16 students.
This one reminds me of the would-be hackers that record their endeavors, post them online, and are amazed when the authorities come knocking at their door (come crashing through their door would be a more accurate description). With this Facebook incident what amazes me the most is the fact that people are willing to post just about anything to social networking sites, clueless of the fact that this might come back to haunt them some day. Does the Michael Phelps unfortunate marijuana case say anything to you?
Getting back to the issue at hand, it must be said that the IT admin mentioned above, 30 year old Robert T. DeCampos Jr., is charged with unauthorized access to a computer (13 counts; misdemeanor) and larceny (1 count; felony). The manner in which he operated was a simple one: with access to the students’ email accounts he was able to access their Facebook accounts as well. These accounts hosted nude and partially nude images of the students, images which Robert T. DeCampos Jr. downloaded and stored.
In our previous coverage on How Not to Use Social Networking Site Facebook we presented how a high school pupil used Facebook to obtain nude pictures of his classmates which were later used for blackmail purposes (sexual blackmail, not the classic give me money to give you back your naked images).
What have we learned today? If you have pictures of yourself in embarrassing situations, make sure you keep them private. Do not post them online!
